Andrei Gorchov, Flutist & Associate Conductor of the Marin Symphony Youth Orchestra
Lessons
I have been teaching flute lessons in Marin County since 2001. I teach at my private studio in Corte Madera and at my home in Novato. I have taught students as young as age 7 through middle school, high school, college level and adult. My students always end up with a lifetime of enjoyment from playing the flute, exploring the vast and wonderful repertoire, and making music together.
During the lessons, students will develop skills on the flute including acquiring a beautiful tone, proper hand position, varied articulation, breath control, and dynamic ability. Students will also develop strong skills of reading music, developing good rhythm, and become familiar with a broad range of stylistic performance elements. There are various opportunities for students to perform if desired, including recitals, community performances, honor bands, and youth symphony programs.
My flute students have been accepted to the following organizations: The Juilliard School, Eastman School of Music, Boston University Institute Tanglewood, Yale Symphony Orchestra, Marin Symphony Youth Orchestra, Marin County Honor Band, Northern California Honor Band, California All State Honor Band, National Flute Association Convention Performer, San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra, San Francisco Conservatory Prep, Young People’s Symphony Youth Orchestra, Oakland Youth Orchestra, Curtis Institute Summer Fest, Oberlin Summer Academy, Juilliard Winds. Further, Concerto Competition winners and soloists with the orchestras of YPSO, MSYO, OYO, the Marin Symphony, and the Prometheus Symphony, Marin Music Chest winners, and Sir James Galway Summer Festival in Switzerland.

About
I have a great love for music education. It was of the utmost importance to me as a young performer and I couldn’t ask for anything more than to pass that along to future generations of musicians. I enjoy teaching as much as my students enjoy playing and I gain great satisfaction from helping them to learn and grow in their musicianship.
I employ a variety of teaching techniques to address a wide range of learning styles and am sensitive to the needs of individual students. I do not utilize one specific method; rather, I feel it is important to adapt my teaching style to best fit the needs and demands of each student.
In addition to teaching the flute, I am a widespread music educator in Marin County. I am the associate conductor and manager of the Marin Symphony Youth Orchestra as well as the Director of Education and Community Engagement with the Marin Symphony. Additionally, I am the Director of Music at Marin Lutheran Church, and I have taught music classes at the San Domenico School Conservatory and at Redwood High School. As part of my music education outreach, I have coached flute sectionals at most middle and high schools in Marin, guest conducted class ensembles, and have brought professional music ensembles and guest artists into classrooms. In our Symphony Day event, over 2,000 4th grade students come to the Marin Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium for our annual educational Marin Symphony performance.
My B.M in Flute Performance is from San Francisco State University where I studied with Linda Lukas and Paul Renzi of the San Francisco Symphony. My conducting studies were with Michael Morgan, esteemed conductor of the Oakland Symphony and Jan Pedersen-Schiff the director of SingersMarin.
